âI saw you two kissing,â Nevaeh blurts, trying to keep her voice even. Her hand is draped around my shoulder as we make our way back to our hotel. âFirst, it was unbelievably hot. Second, you shouldâve never asked him to play this game with you. Guys like him are rare diamonds, ones you find and keep secret from everyone, cherishing every fucking moment with him.â
âHeâs a great friend.â I mutter the first thing that comes to my mind. Drake is a bit farther away from us, talking on the phone with his sister.
âAngie, do you really see him as a friend?â My steps falter, and I twist my ankle again. The pain isnât as strong as it was the first time, but it still hurts. I close my eyes, my eyebrows pinching together. âHey, whatâs wrong?â
âI sprained my ankle a little. Nothing serious.â
Nevaeh gazes at me with a serious expression on her face. Then she glances at Drake and leans into my ear. âInteresting reaction to my question. I think the answer is no, and youâre mentally freaking out.â She pulls back, a triumphant smile on her lips. âYou like your neighborâ¦or should I say your fake boyfriend.â
Instead of an answer, I wiggle out of her embrace and limp toward our hotel. My best friend follows me; her silvery laughter behind my back makes me squirm. She doesnât need my answer. She already knows it. Nev reads me like an open book, and thatâs why she doesnât push the issue. Iâm not ready for a relationship, and she knows it.
A guy like Drake doesnât deserve a girl with as many unresolved issues as me.
I feel his presence even before I see him. His arm slips around my waist, and he pulls me to his side. âI left you for twenty minutes, and you already sprained your ankle.â
âItâs all because of me.â Nev sidles up to us, hurrying to open the door, and we walk inside the hotel. âShe doesnât like my questions.â
A smile ghosts over Drakeâs lips. âThe last time she sprained her ankle was when I was asking questions too.â
âLooks like my best friend doesnât like interrogations.â Nevaeh giggles, proceeding to the elevator, and Drake makes us follow her. As the three of us step inside, she hits the number seven and then number eleven. âYouâve got the best room, by the way. I thought it would be fair.â
âReally?â I frown, eyeing her with doubt.
âReally, Angie,â Nev states, her gaze dancing between Drake and me, lingering on his hand on my waist. âI hope you make the most of it.â The door opens, and she sashays out, throwing a wink over her shoulder. âSee you in the morning for breakfast. Donât be late.â
âWe will try,â I mumble, and the door closes again. The elevator moves higher. âHow is your sister?â
Drake chuckles. âLayla is great. She got my niece in bed, poured herself some wine, and decided to call meâ¦to ask a gazillion of questions.â
âWow.â I exhale, hearing the door open.
